What is the #1 step to becoming a great Saxophonist? The answer to this question is debatable. Ask a thousand musicians, you’ll probably received a thousand different answers, which may include any of the following:
- Learn your Scales
- Practice Long Tones on a daily basis
- Hire an instructor
- Join a Band
While each step has it place, the number #1 step to becoming a better than average Saxophone player, is prayer.
Although we sometimes forget, God cares about us. He cares about our worries, our joys, even our goal of playing for Him. He wants us to succeed, as long as we include him in the plan. We have numerous examples in the bible of individuals who have been blessed through seeking God: Two examples that sprint to mind are 1) David
David was prospering in all his ways for the Lord was with him.
1 Samuel 18:14
and 2) Uzziah
He continued to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding through the vision of God; and as long as he sought the Lord, God prospered him.
2nd Chronicles 26:5
Before even buying a Saxophone, I would suggest setting aside daily devotional time, focused on asking God to bless your craft. Asking him to lead, asking if you should even be playing and most importantly, taking the time to listen for answers.
Here are three text you can meditate on as you pray:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5-6
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Philippians 4:13
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord!
Psalm 150:6
